Jaromír JINDRA - Czech Republic

JAROMÍR JINDRA (1949)

(Czech Republic)

Collector of matchstick labels, writer (author of 43 novels, mostly historical and children's books). He created more than 200 catalogues, albums and studies of 160 Czech matchstick factories and their labels for philumenists. Since 1955 he has been collecting labels from all over the world (excluding advertisements) and his collection contains more than 150,000 different labels and boxes from all over the world.

For this exhibition he prepared a sample from his collection of historical labels from the first years of the 20th century, mostly intended for export to India. At that time (in the years 1618-1918) the territory of the present-day Czech Republic was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and therefore the matchstick labels from the Czech Solo factory in the town of Sušice were marked Made in Austria.

COLLECTING MATCH-RELATED EPHEMERA

As well as collecting matchbox labels, skillets, booklets, whole boxes and vesta tins, I also collect related ephemeral items related to the industry.

Items included in this group can be categorized as –

Match factory envelopes    Match factory letterheads
Advertising booklets           Advertising Posters
Invoices & Receipts           Credit notes
Telegrams                          Badges
Debenture and Share Certificates
Invitation cards                  Business cards

Other general ephemera advertising matches -
      Playing Cards
      Calendars
      Drink Coasters
Cigarette & Trade Cards (match stick puzzles)
      Bus tickets

Some of these can be quite elusive to obtain as most were of a much less quantity than their main product issues i.e. labels, booklets, skillets, etc.

This exhibit shows a variety of match-related ephemera associated with Bryant & May whose factories were located in the UK, Australia & New Zealand.

You may not have thought of adding these “go withs” to your mainstream collection, but I quite enjoy collecting them.
